Postdoctoral Researcher (Climate Econometrics) NUFFIELD COLLEGE – Climate Econometrics Project 

Nuffield College seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher with a background in climate modelling, statistics, econometrics, or climate economics to contribute to the ‘Climate Econometrics (CE)’ project (http://www.climateeconometrics.org/), whose principal aim is to improve the understanding of the impact of humanity on climate and vice versa. 

The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to CE project’s research objectives by carrying out independent scholarly research with a primary focus on climate impact and policy, and collaborative projects with colleagues in the central team, partner institutions, and research groups. They will adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials, with a focus on linking climate sciences and empirical economics. They will help develop ideas for new research projects, and collect and curate relevant data series and manage updates to existing data bases. They will present research at national/international conferences or public and policy meetings, and collaborate in the preparation of research publications and communications to policymakers and the public. The Postdoctoral Researcher will participate in the intellectual life of Nuffield College by attending and, where possible, organising seminars, workshops, and other academic events. They may also undertake a small amount of ad hoc paid teaching or supervision within the collegiate University in Oxford. 

Applicants should hold or be close to completing a PhD/DPhil in Economics, Climate Science, Geoscience, Physics, Mathematics, or a related relevant discipline. The successful candidate is expected to have submitted the doctoral dissertation by the time they take up the post. They should have a demonstrable interest in climate modelling, statistics, econometrics, or climate economics, and the ability to conduct high-quality research evidenced in scholarly output and presentations at international conferences, commensurate with their career stage. Experience of data collection and curation, and experience of statistical computing environments (e.g. R, Ox, Matlab, Python) are essential. Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills to represent the project at meetings, and the capacity to manage their own academic research and associated activities, to contribute ideas for new research projects, to work in an inter-disciplinary environment, and to network effectively to build new contacts. Knowledge of climate science, econometric modelling, and the economics of climate change would be an advantage, as would experience of empirical modelling of spatio-temporal climate data, of non-technical communication of research findings, and of developing or running numerical climate models. 

The post is based at Nuffield College in the University of Oxford. The salary will be £31,866 per annum. The start date is 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter and the post is full-time and fixed term until 30 September 2023, with an initial probationary period of six months.
